The Federal Government has directed key security, disaster, and telecommunications agencies to establish a comprehensive operational roadmap for the nationwide implementation of the 112 national emergency toll-free number.

To drive the process, the government constituted a multi-agency committee comprising the
Nigerian CommREADunications Commission (NCC), Nigeria Police Force (NPF), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and other strategic stakeholders.
The committee has been tasked with finalizing the operational framework and standard operating procedures for official endorsement by the National Economic Council (NEC).
The development was announced in a statement issued on Tuesday by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President).
The initiative follows the NEC’s recent approval designating 112 as Nigeria’s sole universal toll-free emergency response number.
The policy aims to consolidate fragmented emergency channels, eliminate administrative delays, and provide citizens with rapid response mechanisms during fires, traffic accidents, medical emergencies, and security threats.
Speaking at the National Emergency Number 112 Project stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, Vice President Kashim Shettima urged the committee to align its strategy and operational execution with established global best practices.
