As nations around the globe commemorate World Environment Day today, a Nigerian environmental advocacy group, Bridge That Gap Hope for Africa Initiative, has sounded the alarm on the dangers of plastic pollution and called for urgent and collective action to address the growing crisis.
In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Gloria Kasang Bulus, the organization emphasized the theme of this year’s celebration, “Beat Plastic Pollution,” urging individuals, governments, businesses, and civil society to adopt sustainable practices and significantly reduce plastic waste.
“Plastic pollution poses a significant threat to our ecosystems, wildlife, and human health. It contaminates our oceans, soils, and air, with far-reaching consequences for biodiversity and climate change,” the statement read.
With Nigeria ranked among the top plastic polluters globally, generating an estimated 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, the group noted that the country cannot afford to ignore the socio-economic dangers posed by the menace. The accumulation of plastic waste, it warned, contributes to environmental degradation and worsens flooding, especially due to blocked drainage systems, which have led to loss of lives and properties in recent years.
Bridge That Gap Initiative called for increased awareness and action through plastic recycling, reuse, and proper disposal. It also advocated for regular cleanups of water drainages and roads to prevent indiscriminate dumping of plastic waste.
“We are today even more dedicated to raising awareness on practical solutions that contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment for all,” said Bulus. “Through collective action and sustainable choices, we can make a tangible difference in preserving our natural heritage and safeguarding future generations.”
The group is appealing to community leaders, policymakers, and ordinary citizens to champion environmental responsibility and work towards minimizing plastic use and waste in their homes and workplaces.
As the world reflects on environmental protection this June 5th, Bridge That Gap Initiative’s message is clear: plastic pollution is a crisis that must be met with urgency and unity.
“Let us unite in the global effort to ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ and ensure a sustainable future for all,” the statement concluded.
