Chief Mathew Ofoke Uguru is a tested, trusted, competent and dedicated technocrat whose expertise, integrity and commitment to public service have earned him widespread recognition within the All Progressives Congress (APC).
His reputation for fiscal probity, financial discipline and prudent management of resources contributed to his unanimous election as the National Treasurer of the APC this year by party stakeholders who considered him eminently qualified for the position.
Over the years, Chief Uguru has forged a reputation for honesty, integrity and rectitude. His public service record is widely regarded as impeccable and unblemished, as reflected in the honours, awards and recognitions he has received for his contributions to society.
As National Treasurer, Chief Uguru is responsible for receiving party funds, collecting monies paid to the party and ensuring that such funds are deposited into the party’s official bank accounts within 24 hours.
He is also an authorised signatory to the financial accounts of the party and is charged with ensuring the careful and responsible management of its financial resources. In collaboration with the National Financial Secretary, who handles initial collections and fundraising proposals, he prepares and submits a complete annual statement of accounts to the National Executive Committee (NEC).
Since assuming office, Chief Uguru has placed considerable emphasis on consultation, dialogue and regular interaction with his staff and the APC hierarchy. He believes that effective leadership requires listening to the views of those who contribute to the functioning of an organisation.
On assumption of office, the seasoned technocrat and grassroots advocate wasted no time in convening meetings with senior and middle-level staff to gain a better understanding of their concerns, experiences and expectations.
Observers say this inclusive approach has contributed to the progress recorded under his leadership. They note that no matter an individual’s expertise, experience, sincerity or commitment, meaningful results are difficult to achieve without collaboration and respect for the opinions and ideas of others.
Chief Uguru is said to be guided by the familiar principle that while one may move faster alone, greater and more enduring progress is achieved by working with others.
Leadership by example is another principle associated with his style of administration. He has consistently encouraged and mentored subordinates, associates and colleagues who demonstrate hard work, technical competence, commitment and a desire to achieve excellence.
The APC finance administrator has also motivated his staff through his optimistic outlook and belief in the possibility of positive outcomes, even in the face of challenges.
As a devout Christian, Chief Uguru is described by his associates as a man who values charity, benevolence and honesty in his dealings with people, irrespective of ethnic, religious, sectional, linguistic or cultural differences.
His friends, acquaintances and associates cut across the length and breadth of Nigeria. He is also known for operating an open-door and inclusive administrative style that welcomes diverse ideas, opinions and perspectives, provided they are directed towards advancing the interests of the APC and the nation.
Chief Uguru has further demonstrated effective communication and organisational skills in his dealings with various departments and secretariats within and outside the APC. He is regarded as capable of managing multiple responsibilities through careful planning, organisation and prioritisation, with close attention to detail.
A forward-looking professional, he has continued to expand his knowledge and expertise by acquiring additional professional qualifications. He is also a fellow of several professional bodies and associations.
His mature counsel, timely advice, sincerity and reputation for integrity have strengthened his relationship with the leadership and membership of the APC.
From financial administration to staff coordination and party organisation, Chief Mathew Ofoke Uguru has continued to demonstrate the qualities of a competent and dynamic public servant.
