Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar Condemns Arrest of Human Rights Advocate Dele Farotimi

The arrest and detention of prominent lawyer and human rights advocate Dele Farotimi have sparked outrage, with Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar leading the condemnation. Farotimi, known for his outspoken defense of fundamental rights, was reportedly detained over allegations of defamation—a charge many believe should not involve law enforcement.

In a strongly worded statement, Atiku described the incident as “a grim reminder of the dark days of military dictatorship,” likening it to an era when tyranny sought to crush dissent. “The Police’s involvement in a matter like defamation is akin to using a sledgehammer to swat a fly,” Atiku stated, asserting that disputes over defamatory claims should be settled in court rather than through police action.

Atiku warned that this alarming trend signals a broader agenda under the Tinubu administration to stifle free expression and intimidate critics. “This arrest is emblematic of this administration’s insidious agenda to suffocate the fundamental right to free expression. The aim is clear: to harass citizens, particularly those who oppose the regime and the press, paving the way for a one-party state,” he said.

Drawing from personal experience, Atiku highlighted the proper legal process for addressing defamation. “In 2019, I was defamed. Yet, I did not involve the Police to flex muscles or intimidate the defaming citizen. Instead, I sought redress through the courts, where I am still pursuing relief for the injuries to my name and integrity,” he stated.

Atiku called for the immediate and unconditional release of Farotimi, emphasizing that freedom of speech and association are constitutionally enshrined rights, not privileges. “It is an appalling abuse of power to use the Police as a tool for personal vendettas,” he remarked.

The arrest has triggered widespread concern among rights groups and the public, with many accusing the government of undermining democracy and attempting to silence dissent. As outrage mounts, critics argue that actions like this threaten to erode the rule of law and Nigeria’s democratic values.
