The declaration addressed significant global issues, including climate change mitigation and economic inequality.
Notably, the agreement was adopted despite objections from the United States, which chose to boycott the meeting held in Johannesburg.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa hailed the agreement, stating that the consensus showed that countries’ “shared goals” outweighed their differences.
This summit marked the first time a G20 gathering was held on the African continent.
The leadership of the summit over the past three years has rotated among Indonesia, India, and Brazil. Looking ahead, the United States is scheduled to host the G20 summit in 2026.
