Efforts to address the critical shortage of frontline healthcare workers in Kaduna State took center stage at a two-day strategic workshop in Zaria, where health experts and civil society groups gathered to draft a targeted advocacy roadmap.

The event, organized by the Human Resources for Health Technical Working Group (HRH TWG) with support from Lafiya, aimed to tackle systemic workforce gaps hampering healthcare delivery across the state.
Delivering the welcoming remarks, the Chief Medical Director of Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital (BDTH), Professor Abdulkadir Musa Tabari, highlighted the institution’s recent milestones while shedding light on the severe operational hurdles confronting the tertiary health facility.
Professor Tabari identified the immediate exit of frontline health practitioners without timely replacements as a critical bottleneck.
This operational gap, he noted, has severely strained the remaining workforce, making it increasingly difficult to manage the high volume of patients seeking medical attention at the hospital.
To formulate actionable solutions to these pressing challenges, participants from Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and the HRH TWG were broken down into specialized working groups.
Each group was tasked with diagnosing specific human resource challenges, mapping out root causes, and gathering empirical evidence from the field.
The technical sessions culminated in the groups identifying key government stakeholders and drafting tailored advocacy messages.
The finalized briefs will be used to lobby strategic policymakers to implement rapid recruitment drives, optimize funding, and improve retention strategies for health workers across the state.
