Kenya will become the first African nation to host the World Athletics Championships after Nairobi was officially awarded the hosting rights for the 2029 edition.

World Athletics announced the landmark decision on Tuesday following its 242nd Council Meeting in Budapest, Hungary.
In a joint announcement, the governing body also selected Munich, Germany, to host the 2031 edition, with both cities emerging victorious from a field of four competing bidding proposals for the two flagship events.
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe noted that the council faced a tough selection process due to the high quality of all submissions, but stated that Nairobi and Munich ultimately delivered the most compelling bids.
Coe highlighted Kenya’s status as one of the premier athletics nations globally, describing the decision to bring the flagship championships to the African continent for the first time as a historic milestone.
He added that World Athletics had long sought to bring the event to Africa once the ideal conditions and host capabilities were met.
