Nigerian Female Wins Council Election In UK

A female politician of Nigerian decent, Abigail Marshal Katung from Kaduna state, Northern central Nigeria, has been declared winner in the 2019 Leeds City Council elections.

Mrs.Katung is the wife to the running mate to the Kaduna State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governorship Candidate, Isa Ashiru (Sunday Marshall Katung) who contested the 2019 Governorship election.

With the victory recorded in Britain, the woman has become the first African and Nigerian to be elected as a member of the Leeds City Council, She won with an overwhelming majority of votes.

Thomas Riley, Deputy Returning Officer of the elections, announced that Mrs. Katung polled a total of 1,749 to emerge the Councillor for Little London and Woodhouse Ward Of Leeds City Council.

She ran and won the election on the platform of Labour and Co-operative Party to beat Andrews Gavin Michael Of Green Party who scored 391 votes to come second and four other contestants. Abigail will be representing Little London, Woodhouse & the City Centre.

Mrs. Katung commitment to her constituents are listed as follows,

– Working all year round for her constituents,

– She will work towards a safer community,

– Campaign for a cleaner and greener community,

– Campaign against government austerity and,

– Campaign for a business friendly city.

In a statement issued yesterday by Katung, she expressed delight “in her new role and looks forward to the challenges ahead.”

According to her, the victory she recorded will open the doors for more diverse representation in British politics, while adding that She hopes to be a good ambassador of her home country and will ensure positive links are created between the nations to further facilitate the common wealth relationship that already exists.

Katung is born of Nigerian parents from the Southern part of Kaduna State and married with children to Barrister Sunday Marshall Katung.
