The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning of a looming nationwide protest and a possible boycott of future elections, citing “deliberate confusion” by the Senate regarding the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2026.

In a strongly worded statement, the labour union accused the upper legislative chamber of undermining Nigeria’s democracy by failing to mandate the real-time electronic transmission of election results.
The NLC argued that by leaving the mode of transmission to the discretion of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) rather than making it a legal requirement, the Senate is eroding public trust.
Nigerians deserve a transparent system where votes are not only counted but seen to be counted,” the NLC stated.
The union maintained that the current “contradictory positions” held by lawmakers create loopholes for manipulation, stressing that organized labor will not sit idly by while the integrity of the 2027 polls is compromised.
