Yola, Adamawa State – The local government elections held across Adamawa State on Saturday produced victories for several candidates of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), despite the state being governed by the PDP under Governor .
The outcome of the polls has reignited discussions about the state of Nigeria’s democracy, nearly 27 years after the country’s return to civilian rule in 1999. Political observers continue to debate the effectiveness of democratic governance and the extent to which elections reflect the will of the people at the grassroots level.
Among the notable winners was Hon. Dr. Saad Aliyu, who emerged victorious in Hong Local Government Area, defeating candidates from rival political parties, including the APC. Speaking after the announcement of the results, Dr. Aliyu described his victory as timely and well deserved.
He said his administration’s immediate priority would be addressing insecurity in the area to create a safer environment for farmers and stimulate agricultural activities.
“My first priority will be tackling insecurity so that our farmers can return to their farms and agricultural production can thrive,” he said.
In Girei Local Government Area, Hon. Adamu Umar Dallatu of the PDP also secured victory. He pledged to pursue policies aimed at improving the welfare of residents and accelerating development across the local government.
Similarly, Hon. Idris Yahaya won the chairmanship election in Song Local Government Area, recording a decisive victory for the PDP.
In Gombi Local Government Area, Hon. Ishaya Mark reportedly polled more than 16,000 votes to defeat his APC rival, who secured slightly over 3,000 votes.
Also speaking after his victory in Michika Local Government Area, Hon. Danbiyu Paul Tumba praised Governor Fintiri’s leadership, describing him as a hardworking, democratic, and responsive leader.
He called on residents of Adamawa State to continue supporting the governor’s administration and to remain actively engaged in the democratic process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The elections were conducted across the state’s 21 local government areas, with the PDP recording significant successes in several councils. Official results from the Adamawa State Independent Electoral Commission are expected to provide a comprehensive breakdown of the outcomes across all local government areas.
Political analysts say the results will likely influence political alignments and strategies as parties begin preparations for the 2027 general elections.
