Protest: Sokoto Youth group, SYPM withdraws participation, urges others

By Suleiman Adamu, Sokoto

The Sokoto Youth for Progressive Movement(SYPM) has withdrawn from participating in the proposed national protest in national interest and security of lives and property of citizens.

” In the midst of the current hardship, the proposed protest can attract attention from various groups including those who may wish to exploit the situation for their selfish gains”

Addressing a press conference on it position held in the VIP hall of Skyland event center, Sokoto, it’s Chairman, Comrade Mustapha Buda said the purported protest was observed to be faceless and lacking in coordination, effective leadership structure, organisational structure and considering the fragile security situation in the state to avoid aggravating the security concerns already affecting the state.

” SYPM took time to engage in consultation with critical stakeholders and assessment of the situation which it observed these areas of concerns to arrive at it decision against the protest”, he said noting that Sokoto state was a fragile security environment which such protest could lead to tensions with tendency of escalating into violence or unrest.

He also noted that different groups warming up for the protest may have conflicting messages that will make it difficult to achieve the objectives of the protest

Buda explained that SYPM has observed that the obstacle of not having robust leadership frame work will also undermine the planned protest

” Organised peaceful protest often requires permits and adherence to legal guidelines without which can result in violations and disruption of public peace.

” Although, the protest is termed ‘peaceful’ we are skeptical as it can be a potential risk with attendant provocations and confrontations from possible rival groups that will turn it to a violent protest which may threaten access to critical essential services that can compromise safety and security of residents in the state”, Comrade Buda explained citing how precious protest had obstructed critical services in the state capital especially.

He said it was in the best interest of all stakeholders to withdraw from the protest as SYPM remain committed to supporting future initiatives under more favourable conditions.
