The motion was raised by the Chairman of the Committee on Public Accounts, Bamidele Salam, who cited the 2022 financial year report of the Auditor General of the Federation.

The motion alleged that the CBN failed to remit over ₦5 trillion operating surplus and ₦11 trillion government revenue, totaling more than ₦16 trillion.

Salam also noted that the CBN Governor had ignored several previous invitations from the Public Accounts Committee.

During the debate, the Speaker’s proposal to use an ad hoc committee for the investigation—instead of allowing the constitutionally empowered Public Accounts Committee to handle the matter—caused a stir among members who questioned the deviation from standard procedure.
