Ruga Settlement: ‘ We never staged protest in support’ says UDUS students

By Ado Hassan, Sokoto

STUDENTS of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto have through their leadership on Monday, denied involvement in any form of protest or rally demonstrating support for the establishment of ‘Ruga Settlement’  by the Federal Government.

The students leadership said” it is only the intention of some undesirable elements that are pursuing their personal interests occasioned by some ulterior motives and believed that they cannot achieve same without the name of our highly reputable school. We will not stand aloof and watch them spoil our name.”

In a rejoinder statement jointly signed and issued in reaction to alleged online publication of July 13th, 2019 by The Nation, the Students Union Government President, Comrade Umar Farouk Barade Wamakko and Secretary General, Comrade Suleiman Abubakar said the news story was a fabricated material to deliberately tarnish the hard earned image and reputation of the students and the institution generally adjudged to be the most peaceful in the country.

” The news was fabricated and has no iota of truth. It is the hand work of some unscrupulous persons that were trying to tarnish the long earned reputation of our university.

” We are known as law abiding students with high regards to the country’s policies that is what makes us the most peaceful in Nigeria.”

The duo in the statement also expressed dismay over alleged claim by The Nation that the news story was reported by Viralmula.com.

Accordingly, while further distancing itself from the imaginative report, the students leaders added” in fact, we were on a semester vacation since 6th of July,2019 and did not resume until July 22nd,2019. Only we the students leaders that were left behind for a purpose and we did not organise nor attend any demonstration under any guise whatsoever.”

The statement further noted that the fulanis were indelible citizens of the country while pointing out that” the issue of’ Ruga Settlement’ is noe of our business. We are mainly concern about the the growing insecurity issues bedevilling the country”, the statement explained.
