Sokoto demolishes illegal structures at old market

Sokoto state government on Friday began the demolition of illegal structures and make shift shops‎ at the old market.

The demolition exercise which caught up with a number‎ of traders was to provide enough parking space as well create way for fire fighting vehicles on emergency mission.

Speaking on the exercise, the state Special Adviser on Urban and Regional Planning Board, ‎Kasimu Aliyu Gidan Kanawa said occupants of the space did that illegally and had been notified of the exercise but remained defiant.

” After issuing warning and notice, the traders remained adamant and we cannot allow the distortion of the original plan of the market”, he stressed.

According to him” the space was originally and specially reserved  for that purpose but the traders took over the place illegally and the state government felt there is need to ‎provide parking lot and passage as such have to embark on the exercise”, he explained.

Gidan Kanawa further advised those with illegal structures to in their interest‎ vacate the place as government through the board would not hesitate to demolish same.
