The announcement comes as the political opposition and other groups have been issuing calls for citizens to gather on Independence Day, December 9, to demonstrate and mourn over killings that took place following last month’s disputed general election.
The opposition believes that hundreds of people died during the post-poll crackdown by security forces.
While the government has yet to release an official death toll from the violence, it has responded to the crisis by establishing a commission of inquiry to investigate the incidents.
