Cameroonian opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary has fled to The Gambia, seeking safety following his contestation of the recent presidential election results.

The Gambian government confirmed on Sunday that Tchiroma Bakary arrived in the country on 7 November and has been allowed to stay on humanitarian grounds.
The opposition figure has staunchly insisted that he is the legitimate winner of the 12 October election, alleging that the result was rigged to secure an eighth term in office for the incumbent, 92-year-old President Paul Biya.
Tchiroma Bakary’s departure comes amidst threats from the Cameroonian government to put him on trial for allegedly inciting violent post-election demonstrations.
While the opposition leader has denied these allegations, he has instead placed the blame on security forces for what he describes as a crackdown on protesters in the wake of the disputed vote.
