In a sweeping directive, the President ordered the army, police, and intelligence services to immediately expand recruitment and deploy thousands of additional personnel across the nation.
Furthermore, President Tinubu urged the National Assembly to initiate the process of legalizing state police to provide a decentralized mechanism for tackling internal security challenges.
However, the President’s directive was met with a rare departure from usual solidarity by several federal lawmakers. Senators and members of the House of Representatives sharply criticized the Federal Government for negotiating with bandits for the release of hostages recently seized in separate attacks in Kwara and Kebbi States.
The agitated lawmakers demanded an immediate halt to all negotiations with terrorists. They also called for punishment for the official who ordered the withdrawal of troops from the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, Kebbi State, which led to the kidnapping of 24 students on November 17.
