Among the fifteen additional nations newly subject to these partial restrictions is Nigeria, alongside other countries such as Angola, Senegal, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe.

The announcement, issued on December 16, 2025, through a White House fact sheet, justifies the move as a necessary measure to protect U.S. national security and public safety from “demonstrated, persistent, and severe deficiencies” in foreign vetting processes.

The updated policy, which is set to take effect on January 1, 2026, imposes partial limitations on both immigrant and non-immigrant visas for Nigerian nationals, specifically targeting tourist (B-1/B-2), student (F and M), and exchange (J) visa categories.

According to the White House, the decision was influenced by Nigeria’s persistent challenges in sharing law enforcement data and visa overstay rates that exceed U.S. benchmarks.
