Women’s Rights and Climate Action Take Center Stage on International Women’s Day 2025

By Ehis Agbon, Kaduna, Nigeria.

As the world marks International Women’s Day 2025, the urgent need to bridge gender gaps in climate action takes center stage. This year’s theme, “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment”, emphasizes the critical role of women and girls in combating climate change and promoting environmental sustainability.

Gender and Climate Change: A Crucial Intersection

Women and girls, particularly those in vulnerable communities, bear the brunt of climate change. Natural disasters, droughts, and resource scarcity disproportionately impact them, limiting access to food, water, and economic opportunities. According to climate advocates, empowering women through education, leadership opportunities, and legal rights is essential for effective environmental solutions.

Empowerment Through Education and Leadership

Gloria Kasang Bulus, Executive Director of Bridge That Gap Initiative, stressed the importance of equipping girls with environmental knowledge. “When girls receive education on sustainability, they become agents of change in their communities,” she stated in a press release. She further called for the inclusion of women in decision-making processes, highlighting that diverse perspectives lead to more sustainable policies.

A Call for Action

Bulus urged governments, organizations, and communities to implement concrete measures that promote gender equality in climate action. These include:

  • Promoting Gender Equality: Ensuring women and girls have equal access to resources and opportunities in environmental sectors.
  • Supporting Women’s Leadership: Establishing programs that empower women to take active roles in climate governance.
  • Raising Awareness: Amplifying the contributions of women and girls in environmental protection through campaigns and advocacy.

As the world confronts escalating environmental challenges, the need for inclusive and equitable solutions has never been greater. “By advancing the rights and empowerment of all women and girls, we can build a sustainable future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive,” Bulus affirmed.

This International Women’s Day serves as a powerful reminder that gender equality and climate justice go hand in hand. Ensuring that women’s voices are heard in the fight against climate change is not just a matter of fairness—it is a necessity for global progress.
