World Environmental Day: UNICEF, Sokoto govt plant 1m trees against environmental challenges

Sokoto state government in collaboration with the United Nations Children and Education Fund (UNICEF) has unveiled 1 million tree seedlings plantation project to save the environment against climate, desertification and droughts related challenges in the state.

The project which consist of over 70% economic trees will be piloted by a 32 member technical committee inaugurated to coordinate the process.

Speaking shortly before the flag off of the tree planting exercise kick started at the state headquarters of NSCDC, Commissioner for Water Resources, Alhaji Yusuf Maccido, acknowledged UNICEF for its deliberate role to ensuring policies and programmes of the state government achieved desired results.

However, Maccido assured of the state government’s commitment to the success of a safe and friendly environment was maintained.

He described the effects of climate change occasioned by other sundry negative factors as devastating to human and environmental progress, urging for collective efforts to tackle menace.

In his remark, the state Commissioner for Environment, Alhaji Nura Tangaza, said the committee would be responsible for driving the state government desire through proper monitoring , supervision and other relevant action plans on environmental issues across the state.

Tangaza added” engaging the committee will help the measures of being taken to mitigate the challenges posed by desertification and drought resilience. It will also boost our capacity and enable land restoration, climate change and other programmes successfully see the light of the day.

” The committee will aggressively work in synergy with other stakeholders to effectively carry out enlightenment campaigns against dangerous human actions that affects the safety of our environment inorder to tackle and mitigate consequences of climate change through tree plantation as well as nursing across the state.” Tangaza said as he disclosed plans to spread the 1m tree plantation across schools, institutions, reserves and other public and open spaces.

He urged residents in the state to join hands in realise an environmentally safe and friendly Sokoto state.

Earlier, UNICEF WASH Officer in the state, Mr Ebri Ibor, underscored the importance of environmental conservation and assured the agency’s readiness to sustain support to the course describing the committee’s inauguration as a landmark achievement.

Ibor enjoined the committee members to live up to the task and expectations on the objective of the project as he advised that all and findings, suggestions, recommendations by the committee should be transmitted for prompt actions to safe the environment.

However, Professors Ibrahim Dankani and Dr Abubakar Gumi from Usmanu Danfodio University Sokoto delivered lectures on environmental challenges, drought resilience and desertification as well land restoration to boost afforestation.

Also, the campaign for the 2024 World Environmental Day took the Commissioner of Environment among other environmental specialists to Sultan Maccido Institute of Islamic Studies and premises of Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Sokoto command respectively to launch the tree planting exercise witnessed by teachers and students and NSCDC personnel led by Mr Aliyu Gandi, a Deputy State Commandant of NSCDC who all assured of nursing and protecting the trees to maturity.
