The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of eight individuals following the tragic stampede at the Islamic High School, Basorun, Ibadan, during a family funfair event on Wednesday, December 18, 2024. Organized by Wings Foundation in partnership with Agidigbo FM, the event turned fatal, claiming the lives of 35 children and leaving six others critically injured.
The arrested individuals include the main event sponsor, Prophetess Naomi Silekunola (31), the school principal, Fasasi Abdulahi (56), and six other participants: Genesis Christopher (24), Tanimowo Moruf (52), Anisolaja Olabode (42), Idowu Ibrahim (35), and Abiola Oluwatimilehin (25).
The case has been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Iyaganku. The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the unit is overseeing the ongoing investigation.
In response to the tragedy, the police have intensified patrols and increased their presence in the area to maintain order and deter criminal elements from exploiting the situation. The Command has also extended its sympathies to the victims’ families, assuring the public that justice will be served.
