Tinubu and Labour Leaders Holds Late-Night Talks to Avert Protest

In a final effort to prevent a nationwide strike, President Bola Tinubu held a closed-door meeting with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) at the Presidential Villa late Tuesday night.

The talks were aimed at persuading organized labour to suspend their planned demonstrations over the country’s escalating security crisis.

The meeting, which extended into the early hours of Wednesday, included high-level stakeholders such as the Chairman of the Progressives Governors’ Forum, Hope Uzodimma, and the Minister of State for Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha.

Following the discussion, NLC President Joe Ajaero characterized the session as a “consultation” rather than a final negotiation.

He declined to confirm if the protests—originally scheduled for Wednesday, December 17—would be called off, stating that he must first brief the union’s internal organs. “We will go back to the drawing board, digest everything the President said, and move forward from there,” Ajaero told reporters. While the government expressed optimism that the dialogue was productive, the nation remains on standby as the NLC is expected to announce its definitive decision later today.
