The Sokoto State Government has confirmed that a joint airstrike conducted by the Nigerian military in collaboration with the United States Government struck suspected terrorist targets in Tangaza Local Government Area of the state, with no civilian casualties recorded.
The confirmation was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the Director-General, Media and Publicity, Government House, Sokoto, Abubakar Bawa, and made available to journalists in the state capital.
According to the statement, the full impact of the airstrike could not be immediately ascertained, as authorities are awaiting a comprehensive assessment from the joint military operations involved in the exercise.
The statement also addressed reports of objects discovered near Jabo town in Tambuwal Local Government Area, noting that the circumstances surrounding the findings could not yet be explained. It said analysis by Nigerian and U.S. military authorities is ongoing, while stressing that no civilian casualties were recorded in Jabo as well.
“Sokoto State welcomes any collaboration between Nigeria and all relevant global stakeholders aimed at curbing the menace of terrorism and cross-border crimes in the state,” the statement read.
It added that the ongoing security operations are focused on safeguarding the state and ensuring the protection of lives and property of residents.
The state government further noted that over the past two years, it has consistently supported security agencies in the fight against banditry and terrorism by providing essential equipment to strengthen security operations across Sokoto State.
The government called on residents of affected communities to continue cooperating with federal and state authorities by supplying useful information to security agencies to sustain efforts toward restoring lasting peace and security.
It also urged citizens to continue praying for the success of security agencies in defeating criminal elements in Sokoto State and the country at large.
