Plateau Youth Council’s Recall Threat Against Senator Mwadkon Sparks Controversy

A threat by the Plateau Youth Council (PYC), Northern Senatorial District, to initiate a recall process against Senator Pam Mwadkon Dachungyang, who represents Plateau North in the National Assembly, has generated controversy, with supporters of the lawmaker dismissing the move as baseless and politically motivated.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, Convener of the Legislative Writers Forum, Comrade Chris Alu, described the recall threat as lacking substance and failing to provide any concrete justification for such an action.

According to Alu, it is common for newly elected public officials to face numerous requests for financial assistance shortly after assuming office, often without regard to their capacity to meet such demands. He argued that public officials who decline such requests are frequently subjected to public criticism and smear campaigns.

“The recent threat by the Plateau Youth Council to recall Senator Pam Mwadkon Dachungyang falls into this pattern,” Alu said. “The statement issued by the group did not clearly articulate any specific wrongdoing or failure on the part of the senator that would warrant a recall.”

Alu further alleged that the group’s grievance stemmed from the senator’s refusal to provide cash handouts, noting that Senator Mwadkon prefers sustainable empowerment initiatives rather than direct financial inducements.

He maintained that the senator remains focused on his legislative responsibilities and the delivery of development projects to communities across Plateau North, adding that attempts to pressure or blackmail him would not succeed.

“Senator Mwadkon Dachungyang is committed to delivering the dividends of democracy to his constituents and will not be distracted by what he described as unfounded allegations or political distractions,” the statement said.

The Plateau Youth Council has yet to provide detailed evidence or specific constitutional grounds to support its recall threat, as required by law. Political analysts note that the recall of a serving senator is a rigorous process that requires broad-based support from registered voters in the constituency.

As of press time, efforts to reach representatives of the Plateau Youth Council for comments were unsuccessful.
