This directive, issued by the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), marks a critical escalation in the protest against the ongoing abduction of educators and pupils in the state.
The union’s decision stems from deep-seated anxiety and fear regarding the safety of the captives, whose continued detention remains unresolved.
The NUT emphasizes that this situation has severely destabilized school environments, discouraging parents from sending their children to class and creating a climate of pervasive tension within local communities.
While the federal government, through President Bola Tinubu, recently announced plans to deploy 1,000 forest guards to assist in rescue operations, the NUT maintains that more urgent action is required.
In an official statement, Oyo State NUT Chairman, Comrade Hassan Fatai, clarified that the industrial action is intended to compel authorities to prioritize and expedite the safe return of those being held.
Teachers have been instructed to comply with the work stoppage and remain safely at home.
Meanwhile, the union has pledged to maintain pressure on government officials through formal channels until all victims are successfully liberated.
