Nollywood Mourns as Veteran Actor Taiwo Hassan (Ogogo) Passes Away at 66; Buried in Ilaro

The Nigerian film industry and fans nationwide are in mourning following the death of veteran Nollywood actor Alhaji Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, who passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at around 3:00 p.m. at the age of 66.

Following his death after a battle with stage-four cancer, the beloved cultural icon was laid to rest on Monday morning, August 24, 2026, in his hometown of Ilaro, Ogun State, in accordance with Islamic rites. Family members, colleagues, and well-wishers gathered at the Ilaro Pavilion for the laying-in-state and final prayers to pay their respects.

Reacting to the solemn news, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashir Obasa, released a statement expressing deep sorrow and describing Ogogo’s death as a monumental loss to his family, the film industry, and the nation at large.

“Alhaji Taiwo Hassan’s artistry embodied discipline, moral strength, and cultural pride. He was an inspirational figure who elevated the craft and used his platform to promote strong societal values,” Obasa stated on behalf of the Assembly.

Ogogo’s career spanned several decades as a prominent actor, producer, and director, solidifying his legacy as one of the most influential figures in Yoruba cinema.
