His resignation was contained in a letter dated April 22, 2026, addressed to President Bola Tinubu, and is set to take effect from April 30, 2026.
Adelabu stated that the timeline for his exit is intended to ensure an orderly handover of responsibilities and a smooth transition within the ministry. In his correspondence, he expressed a “deep sense of honour and profound gratitude” for the opportunity to serve, noting that his decision aligns with the provisions of the Amended Electoral Act 2026, which requires political appointees seeking elective office to resign.
Reflecting on his tenure, Adelabu highlighted key milestones, including the implementation of the Electricity Act 2023 and an increase in peak power generation to over 6,000 megawatts.
He also recommended the creation of a “Coordinating Minister for Energy” to better harmonize reforms across the power and gas sectors.
The former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria has long eyed the Oyo State governorship, having previously contested for the position in 2019 and 2023.
