Abuja, 31 May 2025 – Former Chief of Army Staff and Nigeria’s Ambassador to Benin Republic, Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusufu Buratai (Rtd), has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bold and radical policy approach, describing it as a “necessary departure” from past economic reforms that have impoverished Nigerians.
Buratai made these remarks during a commemorative lecture held in Abuja to mark the 60th birthday of former Minister of Transportation and political stalwart, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi. The event drew a host of dignitaries, including political leaders, security experts, and members of Nigeria’s elite, who gathered to celebrate Amaechi’s contributions to national development.
Reflecting on his long-standing relationship with the celebrant, Buratai described Amaechi as a leader with a strong commitment to security and political stability, tracing their collaboration back to 2011 when Amaechi was governor of Rivers State. He praised Amaechi for his performance in the 2022 APC presidential primaries and expressed optimism about his future in Nigerian politics.
“Rotimi Amaechi exemplifies a leader who prioritizes security, a trait crucial for Nigeria’s stability,” Buratai stated.
Turning to national issues, Buratai commended President Tinubu’s administration for its audacious economic policies aimed at tackling the country’s persistent challenges. He contrasted the current reforms with the gradualist approaches of previous governments, from the Structural Adjustment Programmes under General Ibrahim Babangida to the fuel subsidy regimes of Presidents Shagari, Obasanjo, Jonathan, and Buhari.
“These past reforms, while well-intentioned, gradually pauperised Nigerians,” Buratai said. “What we are seeing now is a bold attempt to address deep-seated issues, even if it comes with immediate and profound impact. A deep understanding is required for the realisation of the benefits.”
Buratai acknowledged the public outcry over the hardship resulting from the reforms, noting the widespread poverty and insecurity as critical concerns. However, he expressed hope that the second half of Tinubu’s administration would yield tangible improvements in the lives of Nigerians.
“The radical measures are a decisive shift from the gradual suffering of the past,” he said. “It shows a willingness to confront challenges head-on.”
He urged Nigerians to demonstrate resilience and support the government’s efforts to restore security and economic prosperity.
The event was a gathering of Nigeria’s political heavyweights, with tributes flowing for Amaechi’s decades-long service in the nation’s political and developmental landscape.
