Ghanaian presidential spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu confirmed that the former First Lady, politician, and prominent women’s rights advocate died on Thursday morning after a brief illness.
Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings was the widow of Ghana’s longest-serving leader, Jerry John Rawlings, who died five years ago. Rawlings led two successful coups before twice being elected president in multiparty elections.
Following her passing, her family visited President John Mahama on Thursday afternoon to officially notify him of her death. President Mahama leads the National Democratic Congress (NDC) party, which was founded by her late husband.
Tributes to the former First Lady are currently flooding social media.
Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings also held political ambitions of her own, but she lost her bid to become the NDC’s presidential candidate in 2012.
