The Midwest territorial areas comprising twelve tribes shall stand alone – Group threatens to declare Bendel Republic

A group has threatened to declare its own republic – Bendel Republic – if the federal government fails to make efforts towards restructuring Nigeria.
The group, Midwest Movement, which comprises of Edo and Delta states said its declaration for a Bendel Republic will be a fall out of FG’s inability to address the ethnic agitations across Nigeria.
Speaking to journalists in Benin on Wednesday, August 9, the convener of the Midwest Movement, Pedro Obaseki, said the group can no longer hope that the growing agitations in the country will be easily blown away.
Obaseki said the movement condemns any attempt by any ethnic group planning to include Edo and Delta states in their agitations. He said: “We are Midwest Region and we condemn attempt by some ethnic groups trying to include us in their agitation.”
“We will resist any attempt by ethnic jingoists to annex, attach or conscript the Midwest territory as part of their territory.”
He also urged the federal government to expand its consultation and engagement with leaders of all ethnic groups including the Midwest to achieve the restructuring of Nigeria.
“If the federation of Nigeria fails to hold due to government’s inability to play her constitutional role and because of the reckless action of ethnic jingoists, the Midwest territorial areas comprising twelve tribes shall stand alone as Bendel Republic,” Obaseki added.
