1. The House of Representatives has asked the Central Bank of Nigeria to extend the deadline for use of the old naira notes by at least six months since the new notes were not readily available. It also insisted that chief executive officers of banks in the country must appear before the ad hoc committee set up by the House to investigate reasons for the scarcity of the new notes.
According to the lower legislative chamber, both the old and new notes can be in use till June, in line with the CBN Act.

2. Ahead of the January 31 deadline set by the Central Bank of Nigeria for the phasing out of the old 1,000, 500 and 200 naira notes, some mega-churches, schools and retailers have set time limits for the collection of the old currencies and was aimed at saving the organizations from the burden and challenges associated with the exchange of the old naira notes for new ones.
This comes as the lingering shortage of old naira notes have forced several commercial banks to shut their Automated Teller Machines in Lagos, Abuja and other states across the country.

3. Nigeria has launched an African Central Bank-led National Domestic Card Scheme, AfriGO to boost the nation’s economy. The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele said The new card, AfriGO, would be accessible to all Nigerians.
it is expected to strengthen the national payments system and deepen the usage of electronic platforms in Nigeria and aimed at providing more options for domestic consumers while also promoting the delivery of services in a more innovative, cost-effective and competitive manner.

3. Super Eagles coach José Peseiro is excited over the scoring form of Victor Osimhen in the Serie A for Napoli. 4. Kenya’s deputy president has ordered government administrators in the country’s central region to enforce a one-pub-per-town directive that was issued last week.
Rigathi Gachagua also wants entertainment joints in the region to only operate between 5-11 p.m in a new measures meant to deal with alcoholism.
There are however fears that the directives could see many resort to homemade alcohol – often laced with industrial chemicals. Deaths from illicit brews have previously been reported.

The Election Petitions Tribunal hearing the All Progressives Congress’ Adegboyega Oyetola’s petition against the victory of the Peoples Democratic Party’s Ademola Adeleke on Friday annulled the result of the July 16 Osun governorship poll. Justice Tetsea Kume, while delivering a majority decision, declared that the Independent National Electoral Commission did not comply substantially with the constitution and the provisions of the Electoral Act. The National Universities Commission, the National Board for Technical Education, the National Commission for Colleges of Education, and the Federal Ministry of Education were all asked by the House to instruct all tertiary institutions to suspend academic activities during the election period.
