Over a dozen soldiers have been arrested in the Benin Republic following a failed coup attempt, which included the suspected ringleaders of the foiled operation, according to military and security sources.
A military source confirmed that 13 arrests have been made. All the detainees were serving soldiers, with the exception of one who is a former member of the armed forces.
The arrests came shortly after a broadcast on Benin’s national television on Sunday morning, during which a group of military officers announced the removal of President Patrice Talon and the dissolution of all state institutions.
The officers identified themselves as the Military Committee for Refoundation and claimed they had seized power in the West African country.
However, the presidency swiftly dismissed the claims moments later, telling AFP that President Talon was safe and that loyal forces were actively restoring order across the country.
