Kaduna, Nigeria – November 11, 2024:
The Tax Justice Network (TJN), with support from Christian Aid, facilitated a one-day planning meeting with the Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service (KADIRS) to strategize on educating taxpayers about ongoing reforms and improvements in the state’s revenue system. The meeting aimed to enhance public understanding of taxation and sustain the “Tax for Services” initiative, ultimately boosting Kaduna State’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).
The engagement brought together key KADIRS officials from the Corporate Communication and Public Relations Department, Taxpayers Services, and the Tax Intelligence Unit. The TJN was represented by its State Coordinator, Secretary, and a delegate from the Evidence, Media, and Knowledge Management Committee.
Key Outcomes
One of the major highlights was the proposed collaboration on an eight-week radio program, supported by Christian Aid, designed to educate taxpayers across Kaduna State on reforms and policies. Both parties expressed enthusiasm about this initiative, which aims to strengthen the tax system, increase awareness, and improve the state’s IGR.
Focus Areas for the Radio Program:
1. Tax filing and returns.
2. Direct Assessment, particularly for the informal sector.
3. Understanding withholding tax.
4. Navigating the PayKaduna portal.
5. Strengthening cooperation between KADIRS and the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).
Stakeholders emphasized the importance of simplifying tax concepts and dispelling myths about taxation to help citizens understand how revenue is generated and utilized for public services.
To maximize the program’s reach, four radio stations were identified to host the broadcasts in Hausa and Pidgin languages. These stations were selected for their capacity and wide coverage within the state.
Next Steps
Stakeholders agreed to collectively develop and promote the radio program. This includes creating content, scheduling broadcasts, and raising awareness about the initiative. The collaboration underscores a shared commitment to fostering a culture of accountability and co-creation in taxation processes.
Statement from Stakeholders:
“We are excited about this partnership as it aligns with our vision to strengthen Kaduna State’s tax system while ensuring taxpayers are informed and engaged,” said Stephen Waya, Secretary of the Tax Justice Network.
By leveraging media outreach, the partnership seeks to empower citizens with knowledge, encourage voluntary compliance, and foster trust in the state’s tax administration.
