Kaduna, Nigeria — Concerns are mounting over the arrest and continued detention of Kaduna-based government critic, Mycah Dangata, as civil society advocates and concerned citizens call on authorities to uphold democratic principles and the rule of law.
While the full circumstances surrounding Dangata’s arrest remain unclear, the absence of an official statement from security agencies has fueled public speculation that his detention may be linked to his criticism of government policies and actions.
Commenting on the development, active citizen Y.I. Goje said any attempt to punish an individual for expressing dissenting views would raise serious questions about the state of democracy in Nigeria.
“If the connection between his arrest and his criticism of government is established, it would suggest that democracy is losing its original purpose under a government led by individuals who once championed democratic freedoms,” Goje said in a statement.
He urged both President Bola Tinubu and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani to demonstrate their commitment to democratic values by ensuring that due process is followed.
According to him, if Dangata has committed an offense, authorities should formally charge him in court within the time prescribed by law. Otherwise, he should be released without delay.
“The cliché that some leaders fought for democracy is no longer sufficient to excuse present actions,” Goje stated. “We can no longer judge leaders solely by their past struggles. A person may fight for democracy and still exhibit authoritarian tendencies when entrusted with power.”
The case has sparked discussions among citizens and rights advocates, who argue that freedom of expression remains a cornerstone of democratic governance.
Observers say the government’s handling of the matter will serve as a test of its commitment to civil liberties and democratic accountability.
“As we await an official statement, we hope the situation will be handled in a manner that strengthens public confidence in democracy rather than undermines it,” Goje added.
He also called on citizens to remain engaged, ask critical questions, and continue holding public officials accountable.
At the time of filing this report, neither the Kaduna State Government nor security agencies had issued an official statement regarding the reasons for Dangata’s arrest or his current legal status.
