Flash floods triggered by torrential rainfall have killed at least thirty-seven people in Morocco’s coastal Safi region, marking the country’s deadliest flooding disaster in a decade.

The disaster occurred on Sunday, December 14, 2025, after just one hour of exceptionally heavy rain transformed the streets of the main port city into muddy torrents.

State-owned broadcaster SNRT reported at least 37 deaths. Dozens of others have received hospital treatment, with at least two individuals currently in intensive care at Mohammed V Hospital.

Moroccan authorities confirmed that search and rescue missions are still underway as teams comb through the mud-sodden landscape for missing persons. In response to the crisis, the provincial directorate of national education suspended all classes in the region starting Monday.

Experts note that the extreme weather fluctuations follow seven years of severe drought in the North African state, linking the intensity of the storms to the ongoing climate crisis.
