Kenya: Supreme Court Shows its Independence in Election Ruling

Washington  –  September 1, 2017 —  In response to Kenya’s Supreme Court nullifying the results of the August 8 presidential election that returned President Uhuru Kenyatta to office, and subsequently ordering that a new vote be held within 60 days, Freedom House issued the following statement:

“Kenya’s judiciary demonstrated the strength of the country’s democratic institutions and its determination to protect the rule of law, the cornerstone of all democracies,” said Robert Herman, vice president for international programs at Freedom House. “An independent, assertive judiciary can ensure that citizens are genuinely free to choose their leaders and exercise their constitutional rights. In demonstrating its independence, the court has strengthened Kenya’s democracy.”

Kenya is rated Party Free in Freedom in the World 2017, Partly Free in Freedom of the Press 2017, and Free in Freedom on the Net 2016.
