Resurgence of Deadly Terror Attacks in Plateau State: Bokkos Cultural Development Council Decries Violence and Ethnic Cleansing

Bokkos, Plateau State – September 4, 2024

The Bokkos Cultural Development Council (BCDC) Vanguard has issued a distressing statement on the resurgence of terror attacks in Bokkos Local Government Area, Plateau State, Nigeria. The council reports a wave of deadly assaults by Fulani terrorists targeting ethnic minorities, despite ongoing peace agreements facilitated by the Nigerian military.

Since May 2024, the region has witnessed at least 30 murders and the destruction of over 1,000 crop farms, further exacerbating tensions in the area. The BCDC Vanguard has expressed profound dismay, citing a betrayal by those tasked with ensuring their safety.

The council highlighted the latest incidents on September 3, when coordinated attacks in Daffo and Kwatas communities left nearly ten people dead. According to the statement, the assault in Daffo began around 7 p.m. in a commercial area close to a military base. The terrorists, identified as Fulani-speaking, reportedly killed seven people in the brazen attack.

Simultaneously, another set of attacks in Kwatas and Ambul-Barkish resulted in the deaths of at least four people. Although the Sector Commander of the Special Task Force Operations Safe Haven in Bokkos responded to the attacks, the BCDC Vanguard has called for an investigation into the actions of the soldiers stationed at the nearby military base in Daffo.

The council condemned the attacks as part of a longstanding pattern of violence against their communities, which has persisted since 2013. In their statement, they emphasized that despite never initiating attacks on Fulani residents, their communities have been subjected to continuous violence, leading to over 500 deaths and the annexation of their land.

The BCDC Vanguard is now demanding immediate answers and actions from authorities. They have called on the international community to intervene and seek justice for the victims, while also demanding compensation for those who have suffered from the violence and the dismantling of terrorist camps in the region.

The press release was signed by Barr. Farmasum Fuddang, Chairman of BCDC Vanguard, and Amb. Duwam Bosco, Secretary of BCDC Vanguard, along with other council members.

A Press release by Bokkos Cultural Development Council (BCDC) Vanguard

September 4, 2024

The Bokkos Cultural Development Council (BCDC) Vanguard is deeply saddened by the resurgence of deadly attacks by Fulani terrorists targeting ethnic minorities in the Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria. Despite the Nigerian military’s peace agreements, at least 30 murders and over 1,000 crop farm destructions have occurred since May 2024.

We feel betrayed by those responsible for our protection. Close to ten of our members are currently lying dead, victims of the latest assaults in Daffo and Kwatas communities. These attacks, executed simultaneously on September 3, followed a week of isolated attacks resulting in 16 deaths.

The latest attack in Daffo started around 7 pm, targeting peaceful residents in a commercial area near a military base. The Fulani-speaking terrorists launched a brazen attack, leaving at least seven people dead.

At the same time, a similar attacks in Kwatas and Ambul- Barkish killed at least four people.

While we credit the Sector Commander of the Special Task Force Operations Safe Haven in Bokkos for responding to the attack, we call for an investigation into the role of the soldiers manning the nearby base in Daffo.

These attacks confirm our previous fears that the Fulani are not to be trusted. Our people have never launched attacks on Fulani residents, yet we have been subjected to consistent armed attacks since 2013, resulting in over 500 deaths and the forced annexation of our communities.

We demand answers and swift action from those responsible. We call on the international community to rise up and demand justice for our people. We demand adequate compensation for those who have suffered violence and the dislodging of terrorist camps in the area.
