In a statement released on Tuesday via X (formerly Twitter), FIFA confirmed it had immediately initiated a probe after being made aware of an incident involving a supporter and the content creator at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami during Argentina’s Round of 32 match against Cape Verde on July 3.
The 21-year-old internet personality, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr., boasts a massive digital footprint with over 57 million subscribers on YouTube and tens of millions more across other social media platforms.
He has been a prominent fixture throughout the tournament in North America, broadcasting live from stadium stands under a collaborative agreement with FIFA, YouTube, and US broadcaster Fox Sports.
During the July 3 livestream, a confrontation ensued after a fan wearing an Argentina jersey allegedly targeted the Black content creator with offensive remarks, reportedly telling him in Spanish to “go cry to the zoo.”
Adding to the controversy, reports emerged that IShowSpeed was subjected to further racial targeting during Tuesday’s volatile Round of 16 clash between Argentina and Egypt.
Videos circulating online appeared to capture an Argentina supporter mimicking a monkey during an encounter with the streamer in the stands.
Condemning the incidents, FIFA reiterated that the World Cup is a celebration of diversity and respect, emphasizing that anyone who acts in a manner that undermines these core values has no place in the sport.
