…Flags to fly at half-staff in honour of the late leader

Abuja, June 13, 2025 — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the death of his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to a State House press release signed by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Buhari passed away in London at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Friday, June 13, after a prolonged illness.
In response to the news, President Tinubu contacted Mrs. Aisha Buhari, the late President’s widow, to offer his condolences. He also directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the body of the late leader back to Nigeria.
President Tinubu has further ordered that all national flags be flown at half-staff in honour of the deceased former President.
Muhammadu Buhari, a key figure in Nigeria’s political and military history, served as Nigeria’s civilian President from 2015 to 2023 after being elected twice. He had earlier ruled the country as a military Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985.
Tributes are expected to pour in from across Nigeria and around the world in the coming days for the man who played a pivotal role in the country’s governance and security landscape for decades.
