CAJ Holds General Meeting, Sets-up Its Governing Council

The Congress of African Journalists (CAJ) has today completed its first
General Meeting and elected its Governing Council for a three-year term
to address issues affecting journalists and their organizations in
Africa.

“We extend solidarity to all journalists, media workers, and the
respective media organizations in this trying moment. The CAJ is set to
be an inclusive platform to address all issues affecting journalists,
media workers, editors, in their work in Africa,” said Alexandre
Niyungeko, president of CAJ. “We call on female journalists particularly
to join the Congress and to lead on a number of programs envisaged to
address issues related to gender-based violence, sexual and verbal
harassment, as well as online abuse. The commitments to fight specific
threats facing female journalists must be reinforced”.

Leaders elected in the Governing Council are President, Alexandre
Niyungeko (Burundi); Vice-President, Christopher Isiguzo (Nigeria);
Secretary, William Oloo (Kenya); Treasurer, Ms. Monique Kacou (Côte
d’Ivoire). Others elected as members of the Governing Council were:
Foster Dongozi (Zimbabwe); Ibrahima Ndiaye (Senegal); Ms. Idda Francis
Mushi (Tanzania; Ms. Indira Correia Balde (Guinea Bissau); and Siyabonga
Dlamini (Swaziland). Reserve Members are Abdalle Ahmed Mumin (Somalia);
Ms. Patsy Athanase (Seychelles); and Emmanuel Chibwana (Malawi).

In the first part of the General Meeting on 20 October 2020, the
Congress adopted its constitution allowing journalists union and
associations to join as full member affiliates; and other media and
editors organizations as associate affiliates. “The Congress of African
Journalists is open to all member unions and associations of Journalists
in the African continent.” “Other journalists organizations (editors
guild, media and journalism trainers’ organizations, etc.) can be
admitted with the associate member status. ”

The General Meeting, which was hosted by the Nigeria Union of
Journalists (NUJ), received a presentation from the United
Nations-Office of the Special Advisor on Africa on the SDG Media
Compact.

The CAJ condemns all attacks on journalists and calls for the release of
all journalists out of jail. The CAJ resolves to continue to engage all
Governments, the African Union, and partners to uphold press freedom,
the safety of journalists, freedom of expression, and access to

information in Africa.

Le CAJ tient une assemblée générale et met en place son conseil de
direction

Le Congrès des journalistes africains (CAJ) a aujourd’hui achevé sa
première Assemblée générale et élu son Conseil d’administration pour un
mandat de trois ans afin de traiter des questions touchant les
journalistes et leurs organisations en Afrique.

«Nous étendons la solidarité à tous les journalistes, travailleurs des
médias et aux organisations médiatiques respectives en ce moment
difficile. Le CAJ est en passe d’être une plate-forme inclusive pour
aborder toutes les questions touchant les journalistes, les travailleurs
des médias, les rédacteurs en chef, dans leur travail en Afrique », a
déclaré Alexandre Niyungeko, Président du CAJ. «Nous appelons les femmes
journalistes en particulier à rejoindre le Congrès et à diriger un
certain nombre de programmes envisagés pour aborder les problèmes liés à
la violence sexiste, au harcèlement sexuel et verbal, ainsi qu’aux abus
en ligne. Les engagements de lutte contre les menaces spécifiques
auxquelles sont confrontées les femmes journalistes doivent être
renforcés ».

Ont été élus au Conseil de direction, Alexandre Niyungeko (Burundi),
Président; Christopher Isiguzo (Nigéria), Vice-président ; William Oloo
(Kenya), Secrétaire; Mme Monique Kacou (Côte d’Ivoire),Trésorière. Les
autres membres élus sont Foster Dongozi (Zimbabwe); Ibrahima Ndiaye
(Sénégal); Mme Idda Francis Mushi (Tanzanie); Mme Indira Correia Balde
(Guinée Bissau); et Siyabonga Dlamini (Swaziland). Les membres de

Dans une première partie de l’Assemblée générale du 20 octobre 2020, le
Congrès a adopté ses statuts permettant aux syndicats et associations de
journalistes de devenir membres à part entière; et d’autres
organisations de médias et les éditeurs en tant qu’affiliés associés.
«Le Congrès des journalistes africains est ouvert à tous les syndicats
membres et associations de journalistes du continent africain.»
«D’autres organisations de journalistes (des éditeurs, organisations de
formateurs de médias et de journalisme, etc.) peuvent être admises avec
le statut de membre associé.»

L’Assemblée Générale, qui a été accueillie par l’Union des journalistes
du Nigéria (NUJ), a reçu une présentation du Bureau des Nations Unies du
Conseiller spécial pour l’Afrique sur le Pacte pour les médias des ODD.

Le CAJ condamne toutes les attaques contre les journalistes et demande
la libération de tous les journalistes aujourd’hui sous les verrous. Le
CAJ continuera résolument à engager tous les gouvernements, l’Union
africaine et ses partenaires pour défendre la liberté de la presse, la
sécurité des journalistes, la liberté d’expression et l’accès à

l’information en Afrique.
